Profile

About the speaker

Future-oriented topics and innovative products are Dr. Kerstin Bäcker’s playing field. For more than two decades, she has been examining the adaptation of the legal framework to new technical developments, the resulting strategic adjustments and the business models that emerge from them: starting with platform and social media liability for user content (YouTube, cyberlockers, etc.), through NFTs, to Artificial Intelligence.

Her particular focus at present is on European and international regulation of Artificial Intelligence, especially the AI Act, as well as on developing comprehensive compliance strategies that ensure the responsible, global use of AI. In doing so, she combines legal expertise with a holistic and strongly business-oriented view of copyright, data protection and technological innovation. She has many years of experience providing legal support to companies from the business and media sectors, such as educational companies, publishers, audio and music businesses as well as internationally active cultural institutions, and helps her clients make legally secure use of the economic opportunities presented by new developments worldwide. Dr. Kerstin Bäcker is also a recognised specialist in collective rights management and provides comprehensive advice on matters concerning international collecting societies.

She studied in Munich and Paris (Assas II) and holds a doctorate in copyright law. Her international career has included stints in Paris, Cape Town, Melbourne and Barcelona. She has been with LAUSEN since 2002, becoming Partner and head of the Cologne office in 2004. She is a sought-after lecturer and expert speaker (including at the TÜV Rheinland Akademie, the Akademie der Deutschen Medien and the Steinbeis Institut). She has spoken and moderated at international events such as the Hamburg Business Summer School, Forum Bildung, Data Festival, Medientage München and c/o Pop, with a focus on AI and AI regulation. She is the author of articles in specialist publications and (co-)editor of the Handbuch Kulturmanagement.
